Do you want more trees in the town centre?

The majority of local people who have helped influence the early design ideas for the town centre framework have called for green space in the town centre with more trees and planting.

Take a look at the emerging ideas from the architects on the new engagement website – – where you can share your ideas and agree (or disagree) with other people’s thoughts.

In less than a month, 850 people have viewed the plans online and almost 200 comments have been shared on this new platform with many people showing support for the generous, public open space proposed in the framework plan.

It seems opinion is split as to whether this public space should be a series of smaller, more sheltered spaces or two larger spaces which may be suitable for open-air festivals and events. What do you think?

We have heard that local people would like to see more attractive civic buildings in the town centre to give the area a distinctive look and feel. There seems to be a consensus among local people that new civic buildings – including the Council offices, civic meeting space and the library - should be sustainable and environmentally friendly, maybe with features such as living roofs and greenery built in.

During May, we dedicated 50 hours to talking to members of the local community about specific issues in the new framework plan – public space, Council buildings and public amenities and activities in the town centre – collecting feedback forms, which have all been uploaded to our engagement website.
